Thermal properties of glass

The main thermal properties of the glass are:

  • the specific capacity : it is the required heat quantity allowingr to increase the temperature of the 1 gram of the material of 1 degree centigrade (window glass : 0,87 J/g/k)
  • the thermal conductibility : it characterizes the ratio between the thermal flux per surface unit and the temperature gradient ( 1,15 W/m/K)
  • the thermal expansion coefficient : it is the ratio between the relative linear expansion associated to temperature rise ( 3,3 10-6 K-1 for one soda lime glass; 5 10-6 K-1 for a borosilicate glass)
caractérisation mécanique
It is interesting to point out that the thermal shock resistance is the largest temperature variation that material can suffer without damage ( a borosilicate glass (Pyrex) is more resistant than a soda lime glass).
