Optical properties of glass

The most famous optical property is the index of refraction as well as the notion of transmission and reflection that result from this. The light absorption, diffusion and dispersion give complete description of the glass-light interaction.

Some glass components can absorb selectively one or many light waves which determine the glass color.

It depends on :
  • the introduced element, its shape, ion oxidation degree, precipitates
  • the interactions between elements:
      • Co2+ = blue in a soda lime glass, pink in a borosilicate glass
      • Cu+ = blue
      • Cr2+ = green
      • Fe2+ = bottle green
      • Fe3+ = slightly colored
      • Mn2+ = pink
      • Gold or Copper precipitates = red
      • Silver precipitates = yellow
