Procedure for vitrified waste assessment

This procedure (ref ADEME) set up a test system oriented towards the vitrified wastes performances.

At the end of each test, the obtained result is compared to a value limit which allows to envisage:

  • the direct valorisation of the vitrified waste
  • the impossibility of any standardization and so the choice of an other processing or the dumping
  • the necessity of advanced tests identifying the vitrified waste behaviour.

Most of the advocated tests are under standardization. Their successive implementation improves the knowledge of the intrinsic parameters of the material and the refining of long-term behaviour models by maintaining a security factor.

The whole process anticipate the setting of the following tests: (in chronological list)

  • Observation
  • TPQV (powder test for the vitrified waste description ) which is sometimes substituted by specific authorization by TGA (termogravimetric analysis)
  • porosity measurement and visible density
  • composition analysis
  • Soxhlet test: determination of the initial maximum rate of alteration(Vo)
  • Parametrical tests: static tests changing the S/V ratio, the temperature, the pH, The composition of the liching solution : determination of the activation energy of the reaction(Ea) sensitivity to pH…The parameters are determined according to the storage changes and the planned use.
  • thorough analysis: MEB( scanning electron microscope) DRX (XRD)
  • integral tests

The carry out of every test is not systematic : exits of the procedure are available at each level.
In addition, the notion of " vitrified waste class " for which long-term behaviour has been studied, could lead to the procedure simplification through simplified and regular checking.
